Why people come back
Breakfast · 8 to 10am
Eggs from the chickens in the back garden
Marian gets up early. By eight there's bread on the side, fruit from the orchard, eggs that were laid that morning, and a proper coffee setup with a Bambino we're far too fond of. Vegan and gluten-free covered without fuss. Guests usually take breakfast in the conservatory, which faces east — sun streams in until about half ten, then the rest of the day starts properly.
On your doorstep
The four walks we send everyone on
Tom has been walking these hills since the seventies and has a list. There's the gentle 90-minute loop down to the river. The 4-hour ridge walk you'd be foolish to do without good boots. The disused railway line for a hangover. The walk with the pub at the end. We lend OS maps, we lend dog leads, we lend hot flasks. We'll pick you up if it turns nasty.
Evenings
Honesty bar, fire, and decent vinyl
The drawing room has a fire that gets lit at five, a player that does both vinyl and Spotify, and a small bar we run on honesty — list of what's poured, jar for the money. We're not running a pub; we're trying to make sure you can have one drink with a stranger without having to drive into town for it. Most evenings end with someone reading on the chaise and someone else falling asleep in front of the fire.
From the owner
The kettle is always on
We took on this Georgian house in 2013 because we wanted somewhere to put people up the way we like to be put up ourselves — proper beds, proper breakfast, no plastic key cards, no chain-hotel small talk. Four rooms, two cats, a fire in winter, eggs from the back garden in summer. We'll always tell you the best walk, the best pub, and which tea cake to get from the bakery on Northgate Street.
